Charmaine Heyer APP.L GM.Photog I P.B. - 2016 AIPP Australian Professional Creative Photographer of the Year

Charmaine Heyer APP.L GM.Photog I P.B. - Hopefully this poses questions to the viewer about their own relationship with time. How we spend our time? Are we using it to our full potential? This was shot in a sand storm at the beach.
Charmaine Heyer APP.L GM.Photog I P.B. - I wanted to illustrate the excitement and possibilities that are available to us all, and that everything is achievable. The many hats she is balancing represent all the different activities she schedules into her day. The clock hands in her quiver, give her the power to organize her time.
Charmaine Heyer APP.L GM.Photog I P.B. - This is a fusion of her two loves. Modelling and competitive swimming. I purchased some tuna tails to complete her outfit and add the feeling of speed. Her flippers act as gloves and her goggles as a jewellery feature. I wanted the colour palette of the sea, and the mood to add more drama and urgency to the story. Big clock also reinforces her record time.
Charmaine Heyer APP.L GM.Photog I P.B. - Reflections of the years spent at sea. The little wooden boat, makes a suggestion of a lifetime at sea. The vertical panorama adds to the below/above water feel. The little fluffy white clouds dance in the sky beckoning him to sail into the sunset.

Peter Blakeman APP AAIPP - 2016 AIPP Australian Professional Documentary Photographer of the Year

Peter Blakeman APP AAIPP - After shooting a wedding, I had decided to have a few drinks myself..... This event was a bring your own cup only event and this guy decided a trophy was to be his way of securing drinks for the night. I came back to the bar to get another drink in the wee hours of the morning to find this guy slumped over the bar asleep..... In this bar anything goes and people just do what they want and don't get judged for doing it. If you wanted a drink, you ordered over the top of him. I loved the way he was slumped over and knew I had to get a pic of him.
Peter Blakeman APP AAIPP - Pushbike is the only mode of transport at this event unless you are fortunate enough to have an Art Car (A motorised mode of transport that can not have any resemblance to a vehicle). Dust is absoulutly relentless at Burning Man. I had no idea what I was in for when I accepted a contract to photograph a wedding. Pre wedding I had a shot in mind but I had only seen it during the middle of the day. I came back later and secured a spot high up. I waited for a small dust storm to come and with the right light, the image presented itself. As soon as I took it I knew I had something special.
Peter Blakeman APP AAIPP - effery, son of Warri and Yutunga, dubbed The Last Nomads, sheds a tear after lighting a controled burn on his country. It had taken us ten days to get to this spot where the mob would camp on route from water hole to water hole. Waking up first in the morning Jeffery decided to light a controled burn next to the claypan where every one was camped. The rest of the mob woke to the crackling sounds of sap burning and trees cracking. I managed to capture this image as Jeffery was admiring his handy work.
Peter Blakeman APP AAIPP- During Burning Man’s annual gathering in Nevada, the biggest dust storms of the festival limits visibility down to only metres at times. Shown here as yet another dust storm passes by, people continue to enjoy the randomness of meeting new people whilst enjoying art instalations or even standing around a welcoming fire as the sun goes down.

Shireen Hammond APP.L M.Photog III - 2016 AIPP Australian Professional Family Photographer of the Year

Shireen Hammond APP.L M.Photog III - Luigi and Antonietta, a beautiful couple, still living in the very same house that Luigi personally built himself, over 30 years ago. Working with my friend Tony Knight of This Is My Life, who was capturing their life story on video - we heard many stories this day, but one thing I learned was that Coffee is Luigi's passion. Whilst capturing their formal portraits, we had a break, and as in any good italian family, you must be fed..... It was here, when I quietly popped around the corner and watched them both silently working in unison together, like a well oiled machine that only years and years of familiarity brings, that I realised that this, in fact was the portrait that their children and families would most relate too. I loved the juxtaposition of the house that still remained as is, yet there he was, at 80 years old, with his brand new hi tech coffee machine proudly sitting on the bench... Antonietta quietly preparing a feast for lunch in the background. A lover of trying to understand and record life and relationships.... this was an amazing moment that I feel so privileged to have witnessed and captured. This was also confirmed by the reaction of the whole family through tears, when I presented the finished product to them.
Shireen Hammond APP.L M.Photog III - Having captured Caroline and Fouad's wedding, I really wanted to show the close relationship, trust and love between the two of them and now, with the birth of their beautiful little daughter Izzy - completing the family circle in a simple but beautiful way. (The family circle being depicted by the layout and the cropping of the image).
Shireen Hammond APP.L M.Photog III - Having captured Melissa's wedding then newborn images of her first child Thomas and now, her little princess Maddi, who would complete their family, was a very special joy, especially as I love capturing the continuing stories of the lives of my couple's. Melissa is a beautiful and artistic soul, in love with her precious children and I wanted to give her something a bit unique. I noticed at only 5 days old, that Maddi already had many little expressions and commented on this to Melissa, I could see the joy and pride that welled up inside her. Later when looking through the images, I wanted to be able to encapsulate this somewhat for her and so by trial and error, this image was born.

Jerry Ghionis APP.L M.Photog IV - 2016 AIPP Australian Professional Fashion Photographer of the Year

Jerry Ghionis APP.L M.Photog IV - Meghan was simply fearless in front of the camera. Very simply, there was nothing she wouldn’t or couldn’t do while I was photographing her. Photographing her in front of a beautiful canvas backdrop hand painted by Oliphant, the highlights in her hair make it look like it was on fire. I tried a few hair flips to keep her face while still maintaining slight movement in her hair. Her hair looks like it’s on fire and it looks like she’s falling. The result is a strong but quiet and calm portrait.
Jerry Ghionis APP.L M.Photog IV - My main photography influence growing up was Herb Ritts. He was famous for photographing in the bright California sun and bringing out the best in his subjects. And that inspired me for this shoot. I used the avant garde but almost religious-looking crown to create shadows falling on her face so that they look like tears. The negative space on top provides tension but leads your eye into the soft expression.
Jerry Ghionis APP.L M.Photog IV - My first impression of Allison when I met her was that she was extremely timid and painfully shy. I don’t know whether it was just her personality and that she was not a naturally confident person and wary of people or whether it just from being so young. For this shoot, I had access to an incredible wardrobe on Melrose Ave in Beverly Hills and combining the wardrobe with her personality gave me the concept for this shoot. I wanted to amplify her persona which could be interpreted as that of a young, rebellious teen. The outfit itself was made up of a black tutu and a black crocodile jacket. We also put heavy eye make up and styled her hair into somewhat of a mohawk. The minute she stepped in front of my camera, it all made sense for me and it came together. Although her passive look was quite strong, I asked her to frown so I could get those lines between her eyes (my specific directions were, “I want brow pressure”) and that added to the tension of the negative space in front of her. It is a simple but striking image.
Jerry Ghionis APP.L M.Photog IV - I was commissioned to photograph some promotional images of the singer, Zhavea. She usually is depicted with a strong, warrior princess-like persona, but I wanted more intrigue. I wanted to draw attention to her quiet confidence but also showcase her trademark mane-like hair.

Gee Greenslade APP M.Photog - 2016 AIPP Australian Professional Illustrative Photographer of the Year

Gee Greenslade APP M.Photog - This image was a conversation about geek culture and the things I adore. Tetris features in this piece as well as bright colours and pixelation. Its an ode to all things nerdy
Gee Greenslade APP M.Photog - This image was made with a mix of glitch art techniques as well as photoshop. GLitch is where you deliberately corrupt the file making it feel broken down and distorted. in this case it was done using sound. You can transfer an image from its visual representation into a sound version of it, and then save it back as an image,The photograph itself it a portrait of my friend Rachael - who has change my life in so many ways. She is a muic lover and has a passion for beauty in all its ways.
Gee Greenslade APP M.Photog - My 18 year old dog Jontie had just passed away, and my heart was pretty broken from the whole experience. I needed to make artwork about dogs and companionship, and so my amazing manager Dani found Braeda - this georgeous white german shepard. She was an incredible dog and we spent an afternoon making this work.
Gee Greenslade APP M.Photog - A part of the We Could Have Moved Mountains Series of work, created using tiny figurines and twigs all mashed together. This shot is really jut a small conversation about last years win. It has the little guy with a BUNCH of stuff in his way and a tiny little sting of hope leading him to the birth of something new.

Jannick Clausen APP M.Photog - This is a castle in Denmark called Valdemars Slot. This image is extra special to me as the figure you can see is the corner is my mum.
Jannick Clausen APP M.Photog - This is photographed in Denmark and is a composite of two locations I loved. The circle of stones with the small forest inside was captivating but was only surrounded by a field so Using photoshop i moved it on top of the small costal island

Natalie Howe APP M.Photog I - 2016 AIPP Australian Professional Newborn Photographer of the Year

Natalie Howe APP M.Photog I - Baby in hanging basket To be honest, this was a ‘omg I need a last photo for my entry’ type of shot. I had taken the image approximately 6 months prior and I knew I loved it. I saved it in my ‘potentials’ folder and when I realised it suited the look and theme of my portolio I gave it the thumps up. There was no real hidden meaning behind this image. It makes me smile, and when an image makes you smile it has to be shared.
Natalie Howe APP M.Photog I - Baby Isaac and Macey Every family starts off with a puppy, it's your first baby realistically before you graduate to a human one. Baby Macey was Rob and Mel’s first ‘baby’ after their wedding. I also had the honour of capturing their beautiful wedding, so when they called to say they were expecting, it was a natural progression for me to capture another milestone. With baby Macey being the apple of Mel’s eye, that soon was going to change as a human baby took over all the attention. I wanted to show this through imagery, placing Isaac in the centre, the centre of attention, while Macy although still very much loved by her human parents, was no longer the centre of their universe, was placed, just outside.
Natalie Howe APP M.Photog I - Harry Potter Little Caleb was booked in like every other newborn, just a standard session, however, when mum turned up, she brought the little Griffendorf hat with her and I knew I had to quickly come up with something suitable. They had had a hard time in the past year, with her mum passing away from brain surgery complications. Something that is close to home for me, considering I suffer from the same condition her mother died from. I wanted to make them smile and exceed their expectations, considering my son and I are both massive Harry Potter fans, I had the props necessary to take the image to the next level.
Natalie Howe APP M.Photog I - Noughts & Crosses This image is my most proudest newborn image to date. There are so many meanings that can be taken from it, and I have found that those that look at it, take away something different. It seems to affect people differently. For me it represented a specific client of mine. It’s not even her baby that is in the image, but another clients. But the day of this session, I received devasting news that she had lost her 5th child. It affected me quite profoundly, but I had a newborn session I was setting up for so had to get ‘into the mood’. When my client arrived, I asked her if I could shoot a concept after her session and explained what had happened. She was more than happy to oblige. This image is to pay homage to all those who have ever struggled to conceive, whether it be their first or their 5th. Sometimes one of the most natural things to do as a woman, doesn’t come so naturally to some and this image represents those struggles.

Peter Rossi APP.L GM.Photog II P.B. - 2016 AIPP Australian Professional Portrait Photographer of the Year

Peter Rossi APP.L GM.Photog II P.B. - ‘ Exploration ’ is the story of a visionary man. He is forever exploring new horizons, while taking his wife and four children along with him, mindful of keeping them safe and special. Note the family of six trees, kept apart from the rest of the forest. He is an ‘ideas’ man (big cloud represents another thought bubble). This image is an abstract family portrait, highlighting the leader.
Peter Rossi APP.L GM.Photog II P.B. - ‘ Railroad Man ' - I was looking for a novel way to illustrate this man’s lifetime obsession with his model train world. He has created interconnecting rooms of electric trains, controls, tracks and full sets including buildings, people and landscapes; all based on American railroads the day he was born, 21st Oct, 1943. This image is meant to show the extreme detail and complexity of his world, with him as the mastermind.
Peter Rossi APP.L GM.Photog II P.B. - Keep the Gate Open - In the debate that followed the 2016 awards, somebody wrote that this image was not a portrait. No, it is 27 portraits that I feel are needed to be presented together to illustrate the story of a young daughter who spends separate quality time with her Mum and two little dogs, and her Dad with his big dog. The circular timeline represents the girl’s two separate worlds. I chose iconic trees and houses to show the different climates the parents live in. Road signs pointing different directions, hint the parents opposing views on life, but they both agree to Keep the Gate Open
Peter Rossi APP.L GM.Photog II P.B. - ‘Child’s Play’ - The three sisters love playing “ fairies “ together when down the beach, but in their imaginations they are fairies. They can fly, looking after the lights, the butterflies, and the stars. All shot at the beach except the boat, the rockmelon skin ‘water’, the moon and the lamp on a stick.

Angie Connell - 2016 AIPP Australian Emerging Photographer of the Year

Angie Connell - Introducing The Wicked Magician who takes his job of making the rats disappear a little too seriously. If you try explaining to this mildly wicked cat that it is all meant to be an illusion, well you will come out second best. Because as far as he is concerned, the only place rat should disappear to is his stomach. Please note: No rats where harmed in the making of this image! True story. The Wicked Magician is part of my current series - Carnival of Fur and Four Legs which I'm building up to be an exhibition and book. The set was set up in the cat owners lounge room, I had painted the background and floor boards to suit the scene of a 'back stage portrait'. The cat was photographed in the bow-tie and cape on the red stool. But the cat is made up of two images - the expression is one and the body is another. The hat and rats were photographed separately and brought together in post production.
Angie Connell - Lentil, the ridiculously good looking mini-lop, has been part of my folio in both States and Nationals for the last 3 years. Someone had said to me after I had first photographed him, Angie, there is only so much you can do with a rabbit, I took that on as a creative challenge. This particular image was playing homage to the fact that he considers himself to be the royalty of the house, dressed in what he values the most... his food.
Angie Connell - The Balancing Act is part of a series called The Carnival of Fur and Four Legs that I am developing into a exhibition and book. A lot of work went into this image, teaching a dog to unicycle was much easier in my head then what it turned out to be in reality. -insert your polite awkward laugh- I had always envisioned a big clumsy looking dog, as a theme running through the whole carnival series is that the characters are not necessarily very good at their 'acts'. Having a Dalmatian made sense in the end, with it’s spots resembling a clown costume. I had originally tried for a different type of expression, something goofy, but unfortunately it can be somewhat difficult to coach animals into certain expressions! In the end the look of concentration (for the bone that was being held up) was perfect, especially once the rat had been placed on his nose.
